How To Play Cornhole (Bean Bag Toss)
Cornhole is one of the most popular yard games, perfect for parties, weddings, and corporate events. Whether you're a first-time player or looking for a refresher, this guide will walk you through the rules, setup, and scoring so you can start playing like a pro!
What You Need to Play
- 2 cornhole boards (placed 27 feet apart for official play, or closer for casual games)
- 8 bean bags (4 of one color, 4 of another)
- At least 2 players (singles) or 4 players (doubles)
Cornhole Setup
- Place the boards facing each other with the holes at the far end.
- Players stand next to their board, opposite their opponent.
- Each player/team takes turns throwing bean bags toward the opposite board’s hole.
How to Play Cornhole
- Players take turns throwing their four bean bags, aiming to land them on the board or in the hole.
- Throws must be underhand from behind the front edge of the board.
- After all bags are thrown, points are counted before the next round begins.
Cornhole Scoring
- 3 points – If a bag goes through the hole.
- 1 point – If a bag lands and stays on the board.
- 0 points – If a bag misses the board completely or touches the ground first.
Cancellation Scoring
- Only the difference in points is counted each round.
- Example: If Team A scores 6 points and Team B scores 4 points, Team A earns 2 points for that round.
- The game is played until a team reaches 21 points, but you must win by at least 2 points.
Winning the Game
- The first team to reach or exceed 21 points wins!
- Some players have a rule where if you exceed 21 points, you go back down to 15 points. This adds another level of skill to the game!
Cornhole Tips for Beginners
- Aim for a smooth, flat throw to keep the bag from bouncing.
- Try sliding the bag onto the board instead of throwing it too high.
- Adjust your stance and throwing motion for better accuracy.
